Dec24: Farming Adventures at Kodai and Vallioor Farms

December brought a chill to the air, refreshing rain showers, and the vibrant greenery of winter. Amidst the picturesque landscapes of our Kodai and Vallioor farms, we embraced the season with enthusiasm and dedication to various agricultural practices.

Here’s a glimpse into the vibrant life and work on our Kaadu farms during this serene month.

The Lush Greens of Kodai Farm

As the rain kissed the earth and the cold breeze whispered through the hills, Kodai Farm transformed into a heaven of natural beauty and productivity, embodying the essence of organic farming in India.

Coffee Harvest in Full Swing

The highlight of the month was the coffee harvest, a vital part of our farm activities. Our farmers carefully plucked coffee fruits at two-week intervals, ensuring only the ripest were collected. This year’s yield surpassed last year’s, a testament to the importance of organic agriculture and our dedication to sustainable agriculture types of farming. After plucking, the coffee beans were deskinned and spread out to dry, preparing them to become rich, aromatic coffee.

The Challenge of Sapling Plantations

Despite continuous rain slowing progress, we managed to plant 250 teaks and Thothakathi saplings. These efforts highlight our commitment to eco-friendly agricultural sector practices, even in challenging weather conditions.

Construction and Weather Hurdles

Rain also affected construction work on the farm, delaying soil foundation activities. Labor shortages compounded the challenge, but we remain optimistic about resuming full-scale construction as conditions improve.

Vallioor Farm: A Symphony of Farm Life

At Vallioor Farm, winter brought its own magic, blending the rhythm of farm life with the beauty of the season.

Hill Bananas and Vibrant Flowers

Hill bananas began maturing and were sent to a nearby organic shop, bringing the benefits of organic products to the local community. Meanwhile, water apple, starfruit, and rose apple trees burst into bloom, painting the farm with vibrant colors. These flowering trees are a prelude to the sweet and tangy fruits that will ripen in April-May.

My mother’s starfruit jam recipe comes to mind—a healthy treat adored by my kids. We eagerly await the harvest to recreate her magic in the kitchen.

Vegetable Yields and Coconut Sprouts

Small quantities of fresh vegetables were delivered to local shops, showcasing the importance of the agriculture sector in providing organic, farm-fresh produce. Our coconut seedlings also showed signs of growth, with new sprouts symbolizing a hopeful future.

Turmeric and Soil Enrichment

In fields 5 and 8, ploughing was completed to prepare for the next cycle of planting. Black turmeric, known for its high curcumin content, was cultivated in small quantities. Meanwhile, Lakadong turmeric leaves began shedding, signaling the upcoming harvest—a reflection of agriculture types of farming practices focused on health and sustainability.

Rain and Labor Shortages: Challenges and Plans

Persistent rain and labor shortages delayed weeding and organic fertilization. However, these farm activities are scheduled to resume next month, maintaining our commitment to healthy soil management.

Urad Dal and Soil Renewal

The urad dal harvest was completed, and the plants were ploughed back into the soil as green manure to combat whitefly issues and enrich the land. This is part of our holistic approach to agricultural practices that prioritize both productivity and sustainability.

December was a month of challenges and accomplishments. The rains, while unpredictable, nourished the earth and prepared it for the promise of new growth. As we enter the New Year, we carry forward the lessons of this season, ready to nurture our farms and showcase the importance of organic agriculture.
