October 2024 at Kaadu Organics: A Story of Growth and Renewal

October brought a season of change and excitement at Kaadu Organics. Our farms in Kodaikanal and Tirunelveli were alive with fresh activities, embodying the hard work and rewards of organic farming in India, Tamilnadu.

What is organic farming ?

Organic farming is more than just a practice, it’s a commitment to sustainability and purity. In India, organic farming focuses on natural methods, avoiding synthetic chemicals in favor of organic inputs like compost and neem cake. This approach supports biodiversity, preserves soil health, and yields pure, healthy organic foods.

A New Beginning at Kaadu

The month began with a traditional Bhoomi Pooja at our Kodaikanal farm, marking the start of new construction. We’re expanding with additional rooms, creating more space for farming enthusiasts and visitors to explore our agricultural practices first-hand. This development feels like planting seeds that will grow into something beautiful.

Efficiency in Coffee Processing

At Kaadu, our organic farming efforts extend beyond planting. We upgraded from a manual to a motorized coffee pulper, significantly reducing the labor needed. This improvement aligns with our philosophy of blending traditional agriculture with thoughtful, sustainable progress.

Revitalizing Soil Health

This October, we enriched our coffee and pepper plants with natural fertilizers—250 kg of neem cake, 100 kg of bone meal, and 500 kg of enriched manure. These organic inputs are essential for soil fertility, enhancing nutrients in a way that’s both effective and environmentally friendly. Healthy soil is the foundation of all successful agricultural types of farming, and nurturing it is key to our growth.

Rejuvenating Old Orange Trees

After a decade of dormancy, our 10 pruned orange trees are now yielding fruit, a beautiful outcome of thoughtful agricultural practices. It’s proof that by caring for nature, we can revive and sustain life in ways that benefit both the ecosystem and our community.

Expanding Green Cover with Teak Saplings

We received 1,000 teak saplings from Forest Department, planting 800 so far. These young trees will contribute to a healthier ecosystem and help maintain biodiversity on the farm.

Sharing the Organic Journey

A fulfilling part of our journey is sharing it with others. Many friends have expressed interest in owning a piece of Kaadu, so we’re offering small plots of 22-25 cents for those who want to join the organic farming movement.

Challenges and Growth in Tirunelveli

At our Tirunelveli farm, labor shortages have impacted banana and chili planting, though we managed to shift some supplies to local markets. Despite these challenges, we continue to cultivate and clear fields, preparing for future crops. Fields 7 and 8 are cleared of old banana plants, while Fields 1 and 2 undergo weeding to ensure they’re ready for the next cycle.

A Community Growing Together

October has been a month of renewal at Kaadu Organics, where every project—from nurturing old trees to planting new ones—reflects our dedication to organic farming. For those who share our passion, we invite you to join us. Whether through visiting our farms or owning a piece of Kaadu, we welcome you to be part of this journey.
