Karuppu Kavuni Rice Flakes (Poha/ red poha)  is a Traditional rice, “Karuppu Kavuni” gets its name from black glutinous rice. It’s a dark-colored  with a rich, slightly nutty flavor. “Aval” is a term used to describe flattened rice flakes that are used in a variety of Indian and South Asian recipes.

In Telugu, we call it atukulu.

Kavuni Aval Upma (Quick Recipe)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup karuppu kavuni aval
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 1 green chilli
  • Mustard seeds
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt as needed
  • Oil

How to Prepare

  1. Rinse aval lightly and keep aside
  2. Heat oil, add mustard seeds and curry leaves
  3. Add onion and green chilli, sauté lightly
  4. Add aval and salt
  5. Mix gently and cook for 2–3 minutes
  6. Serve hot

Kavuni Aval Sweet Porridge

Steps

    1. Cook aval with water or milk
    2. Stir until soft
    3. Add jaggery and cardamom
    4. Serve warm
