Agro tourism center wasteland!
The IT employee’s efforts reap benefits
In Tamil Nadu during 80’s and 90’s most of the families depended on villages. There were many people who went to school while watching the agricultural work in the fields. But today’s younger generation does not get direct experience of agriculture due to the rapid development of urban areas. Due to this, the respective educational institutes from schools and colleges take the students on agricultural tours so that the students can have a direct experience of agriculture. Especially in northern states, such agro-tourism is increasing in many places are coming .But agro tourism is not that much in our Tamil Nadu. However, some farmers are improving their farms so that agro-tourism can flourish in many places. Arunkumar, an IT employee, is designing his farm as an agro-tourism center on 9 acres of Tanakarai kulam near Radhapuram, Tirunelveli Mavt. We met Arunkumar who is working hard on his farm while working in IT.
“My hometown is Valliyur. I am working in a private IT company in Hosur. I know very well the effects of mixing chemicals in food products. So, buy natural food without chemical additives
I wanted to give the same to my children. But it is not so easy to find the right foods in the market. What if we grow and farm our own food then? I thought that. As a result, in the year 2016, I bought 9 acres of barren land near Radhapuram and cultivated it and started organic farming. When I started farming I did not start with any profit motive.
I am planting and growing many different types of trees including drumstick and coconut. I am planting and growing banana and pomegranate varieties. At one point, I decided to market coconuts, gooseberries etc. which were in excess of demand. It was then that I created a website called Kaadu Organics and started selling directly through it. I have joined some other farmers with me and arranged to get the natural agricultural products needed by the public at one place.
I have seen school children being invited to farm tours in northern states. Seeing that, I thought that we can also set up an agricultural tourism place in Radhapuram. Subsequently, I decided to set up an agricultural circle at a cost of Rs.22 lakh.
We currently have 10 varieties of bananas in our garden. There are 42 types of fruit trees including apple and pomegranate. Apart from this, I am also planting and maintaining tree species including whip. I have named this agricultural farm as Food Forest.
I am also converting and selling agricultural products into value added products. Especially bananas are also sold as dry fruit. For this purpose, I have bought a ‘solar dryer’ which can run on sunlight. Chilli powder from chillies and turmeric from turmeric
I am also selling highly valued products like turmeric powder. There are also special tools for that.
As for vegetables, palm is not grown for sale. Doing so will require extra attention.
I am doing the work of watering the trees and plants here by remote control. This allows me to finish my office work and do farm maintenance work easily. A student coming here has no understanding of agriculture
In today’s age of urgency, everything has become fast movement. You have to do everything like taking a nap and taking a bath quickly and then run. If you go inside this farm, you can relax with pump set bath and crop industry experience.
Even if it doesn’t, I’m sure you’ll get clarity on it after coming here. I have made it possible for them to see the work going on here not only for fun, but also to see it directly in the field. This will give them direct experience of agricultural work. I have set up various methods of irrigation including drain irrigation and drip irrigation. The trend of taking students on agri-tourism did not increase rice in neighborhood schools. If I look at this as a business I might regret it. I see this as something I do for my own needs. I will continue to do this,” he says.
