Overview of August and September Activities

The months of August and September presented Kaadu Organics with unique challenges, primarily due to limited labor resources. However, essential tasks were still completed across our Kodaikanal and Tirunelveli farms. This article will share a close-up of our farm activities and agricultural practices as we focused on nurturing and maintaining our organic crops, using various methods of organic farming that uphold sustainable agriculture and contribute to the overall importance of organic agriculture.

August 2024: Nursery Setup and Weed Management

Kodaikanal Farm: Coffee and Pepper Nurseries

In August, the Kodaikanal farm dedicated its efforts to nursery setup for coffee and pepper—an integral part of Kaadu Organics’ diverse types of farming. Nursery bags were filled with sand and carefully prepared for planting. With 500 coffee saplings and 600 pepper sticks successfully planted, this farm activity supports our commitment to producing high-quality organic coffee and pepper, central to our agriculture types of farming.

Weed Removal Challenges

Weed removal is a critical maintenance task and essential in organic farming to ensure optimal crop health without synthetic chemicals. Both farms undertook weed removal despite the limited manpower, underscoring the importance of organic agricultural practices. In Tirunelveli, weed management was concentrated in the turmeric and ginger fields to ensure nutrient availability and healthy plant growth.

September 2024: Pruning, Harvesting, and Moringa Processing

Kodaikanal Farm: Pruning and Early Harvesting

In September, pruning was conducted on the coffee plants in Kodaikanal, removing dead stems and light branches to encourage healthy growth. Pruning is a proven method in organic farming that strengthens plant resilience and improves crop yield. Early coffee fruits were also selectively plucked. Additionally, pepper vines were supported by tying them to nearby trees, promoting a robust pepper yield for the upcoming season.

The Kodaikanal farm also harvested 5 kg of Gandhari, or bird’s eye chilies—an important ingredient for Kaadu Organics. Known for their intense heat and flavor, these red chilies were carefully cleaned and stored, aligning with our agricultural practice of delivering quality organic products.

Tirunelveli Farm: Moringa Processing and Soil Management

In Tirunelveli, labor shortages required us to prioritize essential activities. Moringa leaves were harvested and dried in a solar panel before being sent to Kaadu Organics’ warehouse, where they’ll be processed into moringa leaf powder, rich in nutrients and highly beneficial. Ploughing was also done in the chili fields, preparing the soil for future planting cycles and nutrient enrichment, a fundamental step in organic agriculture types of farming.
